You will always be the best dance partner - please save one for me in Heaven.
Captain Michael Edward McCormack of San Antonio, Texas, “fought the good fight, finished the race,” and now rests in the arms of his Maker. A devoted husband, father, educator, and servant-leader, Michael passed away at the age of 77 after a life lived with purpose and grace.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of 46 years, Joy McCormack, and their cherished daughter, Diana Lee McCormack, both of San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lieutenant Colonel William Edward McCormack and Mary Elizabeth McCormack of Grand Prairie, Texas.
Michael and Joy were married on July 28, 1979, at Frazer United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Their love story spanned nearly five decades, and their greatest joy was their daughter, who was later baptized in the same church that witnessed their vows.
Michael earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Texas, followed by three master’s degrees: a Master of Business Administration (MBA), a MSc in Administration, and a Master of Science. Ever the lifelong learner, he will be posthumously awarded a fourth degree in MEd in Adult and Higher Education in December 2025; Diana accepted the degree in his honor.
Affectionately known as “Mr. Mike,” he co-founded the first Classical Ballet school in Wilson County with Diana to expand fine-arts opportunities in underserved communities. He helped bring 11 productions to the stage; Peter Pan and Dance of the Decades were among his favorites. He was the ultimate dance dad, cheering with pride from backstage and beyond. He laid the foundation for The Medina Ballet - an expansion he witnessed his daughter accomplish with all the learning and support she learned from her father.
Michael’s love of literature, computer science, music, and dance, and his ready sense of humor, touched every part of his life. Known for his dad-jokes, warm presence, and unwavering support for others, he challenged injustice and extended a helping hand wherever he went. One of his favorite reminders came from Carl J. Barger: “Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way.” He also kept a card in his wallet reading “Christ is your Master,” cleverly styled with the MasterCard logo; a small reflection of his faith, wit, and dedication.
A tapestry hanging in Michael’s office captured his guiding creed: “I shall pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore I can do, or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” — Stephen Grellet
Michael Edward McCormack’s life was a testament to service, education, faith, and love. He leaves an enduring legacy in his family, his students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
